Services:
Sunday Mornings 10:15am
Religious education for children and child care for babies is
also offered.
If
you are looking for an open minded
congregation
that allows you to seek your own spiritual truth,
while upholding the worth and dignity of every person,
we are the religious home for you.
Our fellowship
is currently led by a minister and lay leaders, with programs
covering a variety of topics, from spiritual to social issues.
- We offer Religious
Education and child care during the adult service, although children
are always welcome to stay with their parents.
- Our building
is handicapped accessible and we have sign language and other
assistance for visitors with sight or hearing problems.
- Ours is a "come
as you are" fellowship, whether that be jeans and a t-shirt
or your "Sunday best".
- Our fellowship organized
in 1953. We have been in our present building since 1983.
- We have approximately
50 members, with an average attendance of 35 members and friends.
- We are a socially
and politically active fellowship. In the last year, for example,
we have taken on the issue of racism, hosting the breakfast series,
"Combating Racism".
- We have both men's
and women's groups, and offer a variety of social activities throughout
the year.
- We have long supported
Planned Parenthood and back the social service programs of Dove
Inc. in the Decatur area.
- We are affiliated
with the Unitarian Universalist Association, a nationwide organization
that speaks for member congregations on social issues.

What
can you expect at a UUFD service?
Our services are similar
to other liberal churches. While the format sometimes varies, the
following activities will be seen each Sunday:
- Music will open and
close the service.
- We will begin with
a welcome from the service leader, followed by community and congregational
announcements from our members and guests. Our minister, John
Biedler, leads many services, while others feature speakers
from the community. Please refer to our Home
Page for a schedule of upcoming services.
- The service leader
will ask for Joys and Concerns from our members and guests. A
candle will be lit for each, as well as one for those Joys and
Concerns left unspoken, and another for everyone in this world
for whom a candle is never lit.
- We will rise from
our seats and greet each other before pausing for a short meditation,
moment of silence, or silent prayer.
- If children are present
in the congregation, they will enjoy a "Children's Focus"
story before exiting to join their Religious
Education class.
- The speaker will begin
at this point. When they have finished, we will once again enjoy
a musical selection before we are dismissed.
- But that's
not all! After each service, we enjoy coffee, treats
and excellent company in the foyer. On many occasions, we will
then return to our seats to participate in extended open discussions
of the day's topic.
We
hope that you will join us soon!
